An experiment was carried out in the animal metabolism laboratory of the DNAP of the Institute of Animal Science of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, with the objective of evaluating the performance of broilers of the Cobb line from 1 to 21 days of age, fed with diets containing levels of the seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii. The experimental design was the completely randomized, with 5 treatments, 6 replicates and 5 birds per replicate. The Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed, raw, dehydrated and ground were added to the broiler rations at the levels of 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%. Feed intake, weight gain, conversion and viability were evaluated in the period from 1 to 21 days of age. For the evaluation of the metabolizable, the methodology of the total collection of feces was applied for the period of 5 days, the excreta and the experimental rations were submitted to analysis and with the result of this the coefficients of metabolizability of dry matter (CMMS), protein (CMPB), crude energy (CMEB), mineral matter retention coefficient (CRMM), phosphorus retention coefficient (CRP), metabolizable energy (AME) and corrected apparent metabolizable energy for nitrogen balance (AMEn). At 21 days of age, one bird per replicate was selected, according to the mean weight of the replicate, the birds were slaughtered and the proventriculus, gizzard, liver and small intestine were dissected for histopathological evaluation. The legs were also collected for evaluation of bone quality, for which the Seedor Index, the bone strength test and the determination of mineral matter were calculated. No effect of the addition of different levels of algae on performance, bone quality and mineral matter retention coefficients (CRMM), phosphorus retention coefficient (CRF) was observed. On the coefficients CMMS, CMN, CME observed a reduction in the indexes, in relation to the control, with the increase of the levels of addition of seaweed. Not allowing to establish a level of inclusion of seaweed.
