Abstract: The udder evaluation in goats is usually performed by visual score or measurements by tools, like metric scales or pachymeters. However, minor invasive methods like digital image analysis have been considered in dairy cattle. Considering this, the present study aimed to evaluate udder of Saanen goats by digital image analysis and verify its associations with milk yield. Thirty-seven Saanen goats from two farms were evaluated. The udder of each female was evaluated, before the first milking, for visual traits, measurements by tools and, by digital image analysis from caudal view. Dairy control was individually performed during the lactation to obtain milk yield. The data was analyzed for correlation between udder traits, principal component analysis of udder traits and correlation of udder traits and milk yield. It was also performed prediction models of milk yield based on udder traits obtained by tools or digital image analysis. Digital udder traits were significantly correlated with visual udder scores and udder measurements by tools (p<0,05). The udder trait with the highest predictive power (r=0,82, r2=0,68) of milk yield was obtained by digital image analysis and was the free udder area (p<0,05). In conclusion, the udder evaluation by digital image analysis is an effective, objective e minor invasive method, which allow inferences on milk yield in Saanen goats.
