Identification of variables that affect the water consumption of lactating dairy calves

The objective of this study was to identify the main factors that interfere with the water intake of dairy calves in the early stage of life (0 to 90 days of age) and to describe the main effects of water intake on the growth, health and performance of calves. For this study, 9 (nine) experiments performed previously were used to compose the database, with daily measurements of water intake. Water consumption as a function of qualitative variables (type of concentrated ration and type of liquid food) were tested by analysis of variance, while quantitative variables (body weight, age, consumption of liquid and solid food) were previously submitted to a graphical evaluation in order to identify the default behavior of the data. First and second order linear models were tested for water consumption as a function of concentrate consumption. For the other independent variables (body weight, age, and liquid food consumption) non-linear exponential models were fitted. The results show that water consumption had a positive influence on solid food consumption, but there was no significant difference when the physical form of the concentrate was evaluated, whether it was mash or pelleted (p= 0.442). There was an increase in water intake as the supply of milk decreased, coinciding with the weaning and post-weaning phase, when animals receive restricted amounts of milk or milk replacer and increase thirst and need for water consumption. Regarding body weight and age, the results showed that, at birth (30 kg), the evaluated animals consumed an average of 1.04 L of water/day, a value that doubled at 54 kg (2.0 L/day) and tripled at 68 kg (3.01 L/day) and that water intake increases with advancing age of the animals, which consumed from 0.79 L of water/d on the 1th day of life to 8.9 L of water/d on the 80th day. For new updates on water intake by the category of dairy calves, it is necessary to carry out studies that prioritize the supply of water in adequate quantity and quality, including this element as the main response variable, especially in tropical environments, aiming at new results in the consumption of water by animals in the breeding phase, in order to achieve a healthier animal production and with satisfactory productive performance.
