SUMMARY:

This work presents discussions about the displacement of cangaceiros on the borders of Ceará

and the discursive construction of fear elaborated by the local press and neighboring states

between the years 1912 and 1928. When studying the discourses about these subjects, we

come across descriptions that highlight their audacity, violence and cruelty of their actions. In

many works, they dedicate themselves to commenting on the actions, but the space where

they take place does not receive due attention and, in some cases, they are naturalized and

apprehended as something given. Our proposal is to denaturalize these spaces, seeing them as

places of power, as constructors of discourses and identities. Thus, this work seeks to

understand the discourses of fear disseminated by the press and discuss how fear is mobilized

to meet interests and uses of space, discursively (re)constructing practices and subjects. For

this research, we selected newspapers from Ceará and neighboring states, as well as messages

from State Presidents to the Assembly. This allowed us to map the urgency that the theme

gained in the 1920s and analyze the various discourses that pointed to a threat of invasion and

destruction in cities, thus thinking about a spatialization of fear based on the movement of

cangaceiros across borders and the multiple possibilities they offered.
