Ideals of civilization and progress versus the sanitary conditions of the imperial capital (1876-1877)
Rio de Janeiro; Second Reign; Aleixo Gary Service; Civilization; Citizenship.
The present dissertation has as its object of analysis the sanitary aspect of the streets of Rio de Janeiro from the public cleaning service carried out in 1876 and 1877.
The time frame is specific, as it considers the execution and termination of a short-term contract that paved the way for Pedro Aleixo Gary to take over the city's cleaning and irrigation service.
Having enshrined its name in the history of public cleaning, this research seeks to analyse how those services were being carried out and compare them with the first 18 months of the service provided by the Gary company.
The analysis is based on publications in newspapers, made by the population, which deal with the services, and clarification publications made by the company. To compose the information framework, the letters sent to the City Council are also analysed, by parish inspectors on both services.
Through these sources, it is intended to identify the sanitary conditions of the streets of Rio de Janeiro in a context of modernity that was marked by the diffusion of the ideals of civilization and progress; in addition, it seeks to understand the role played by the City Council, through its agents, in the daily maintenance of public hygiene and, to highlight an incipient exercise of citizenship on the part of those who took their demands about the mentioned services to the newspapers.
