SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the interference caused by the various control and censorship mechanisms developed during the civil-military dictatorship and how their actions impacted the format of the Samba Schools in Rio de Janeiro that can be seen until today. Within a time frame that comprises the years of civil-military dictatorship in Brazil, more specifically between 1969, the year in which one of the most famous sambas by GRES Império Serrano, “Heróis da Liberdade”, was censored in the first carnival after the promulgation of AI-5, until 1985, the final year of the dictatorship and one year after the creation of the Independent League of Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro (LIESA). With this, we intend to observe how the interference of the dictatorial regime, allied to other sectors within the associations themselves - such as the interference of the bankers of the Jogo do Bicho and the presence of the carnavalescos - changes the way of making carnival and often inhibits the sambistas responsible for creating the schools and also the marginalized portion, largely made up of residents of the communities in which these recreational entities are located, often causing these characters to become overshadowed in the midst of the spectacle. The reason for choosing the time cut is for the following reasons, the first of which allows us to observe the processes of change through this censorship episode in 1969, the second, being the end of the cut in the year 1985 so that we can perceive that even with the end of the dictatorship, the content of what was being built previously found such solid bases for its consolidation that it was maintained even at the end of the years of lead.
