SUMMARY:

This thesis analyzes the origin of the Imperial War Navy, an institution that emerged in the same process of formation of the Brazilian national State, both being loaded with Portuguese colonial heritage. We will highlight the fact that in addition to being forged from the Portuguese Navy in the context of Brazil's political emancipation (1822), the Brazilian naval force received great influence from the slave society, not only through the entry of slaves into its warships and arsenals. , in a clear demonstration that values in favor of slavery were shared within the military, but also due to the capital contribution from slave traders. On the other hand, captive traffickers, during the Cisplatine War (1825-1828), relied on the services of the naval war force on both sides of the South Atlantic, since the Brazilian Imperial Navy, in addition to having promoted the protection of the trade in cabotage along the Brazilian coast, deployed a naval division north of Luanda, between the slave ports of Molembo, Cabinda and Ambriz, with the mission of safeguarding Brazilian slave vessels against attacks by Argentine corsairs. The work also investigates the persistent Atlantic- African slave policy of the Brazilian Empire throughout the 1830s and 1840s, seeking to understand the internal reasons for the Brazilian reality, as well as external factors, which contributed to the permanence of the slave trade until the beginning of the 1850s. Among the latter, we will highlight the construction of an area of Brazilian influence through solid commercial networks in the autonomous African regions around the Zaire River, as well as the great compatibility of interests and customs between the slave societies of Brazil and of the kingdom of Cabinda. As an innovative aspect in the analysis of the process of maintaining the Atlantic captive trade, we highlight the role played by African authorities and, in this way, we do not reduce the political and mercantile issues surrounding trafficking to the spheres of diplomacy and British, Portuguese and Brazilians.
