SUMMARY:

The present work aims to analyze the notion of the possible imagery construction of the ideal black woman in Brazil during the 19th century, through the investigation of the cartes-de-visite, a famous photographic type of the 19th century, signed by the photographer Alberto Henschel. Our approach will question their manners, the image ideal created or fostered from these representations, and the difference between white and black women from the construction of the imaginary and visual culture about the feminine. We are guided by the concepts of representation, gender, control images, guided by the History of Women and History of Photography in the 19th century, and theoretical-methodological proposals proposed by Solange Lima, Vânia Carvalho and Mônica Cardim through the description of the image and discussion about the experience slave in Brazil.
