SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the participation of women in the process of requesting authorship in patents in Brazil, in the period between 1873 and 1910. The collection Industrial Privileges, located in the Arquivo Nacional do Rio de Janeiro, has a collection of nine thousand three hundred and one records of request for letters patent of invention, also known as "privilégios industriais" in the portuguese language, which constitute the fundamental sources for this research. After a previous survey, it was possible to find about ninety-nine letters patent of authorship of women, or co-authorship, taking into account the records that contain the names of Brazilian and foreign applicants. Thus, we intend to map the profile of these women inventors, who participated directly in the process of requesting privileges in Brazil, during the proposed period, questioning some elements such as: social class, nationality and place of birth, age, profession and/or occupation, place of residence, and possible connections with the productive process of the invented genres. Furthermore, we will seek to investigate what were the main difficulties for the participation of women in the patent application process and the spaces in which these women sought visibility to expose their inventions. Finally, we intend to identify the participation of women in the World's Fair and National Expositions as a space of visibility for their production and what were the challenges for their participation.
