SUMMARY:

It seeks to investigate the experiences of enslaved, free and liberated women who migrated to the city of Rio de Janeiro and who made up the Rio working class in the period between 1871 and 1888. Above all, it is observed who these women were being taken to the House of Detention amid a situation of political, social and economic changes and transformations in the city of Corte between the period of promulgation of the Free Womb Law and the eve of Abolition. In this sense, the aim is to analyze the profile of these women across issues of gender, race, nationality, social status and work. In this way, we seek to analyze three aspects of incarceration, such as: race, work and prostitution, through diverse sources such as prisoner enrollment records, periodicals, reports from the Ministry of Justice and the Criminal Code of 1830. Thus, we will treat the discussion surrounding prison models and imperial penitentiary practices that were concerned with the surveillance and control of a poor and eslaved population and how such issues influenced the lives of the women treated here. In the following pages, we will see real existences of women who behind their names were washerwomen, maids, greengrocers, prostitutes who stole, ran away from their masters, practiced witchcraft, among many other reasons and who despite being seen as immoral, dangerous and undisciplined, left their marks by being present on the streets of the city, creating their forms of livelihood, breaki
