SUMMARY:

The main objective of this work is to analyze the actions of the Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Acadêmicos do Salgueiro to consolidate itself among the main samba schools in the period between 1959 and 1965, taking advantage of the contexts of the time and carrying out this correct reading, which culminated in the rescue of Afro- Brazilian themes, understanding, in turn, such actions as tactics, like those defined by Michel de Certeau. Furthermore, we seek to understand the reasons why this association and its carnival artist Fernando Pamplona were identified as the main responsible for an aesthetic and thematic revolution that allegedly changed the standards of the parades that were until then conceived and presented by the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro. In this sense, we hypothesize that the artist’s arrival and this recovery of Afro-Brazilian themes, besides not being something new, did not necessarily mean a revolution, but rather a moment in which another of the tactics that were recurrent throughout the history of samba schools was activated, helping Acadêmicos do Salgueiro to
consolidate itself among the three major samba schools of the time: Portela, Estação Primeira de Mangueira e Império Serrano. To try to prove our hypothesis and achieve our objective, we resorted to the analysis of works, academic or not, that contributed to solidifying the idea of a Salgueirense revolution, as well as those that sought to oppose this thought. Besides, we approached several newspapers that narrated the period between 1950 e 1965, trying to find out how they perceived that moment in the history of samba schools and how they narrated the tensions and conflicts that arose. Finally, we explored the interviews and testimonies given by personalities who actively participated in that process as a way of analyzing how they understood that moment.
