SUMMARY:

The main aim of this study is to examine wage disputes in court cases between 1830 and 1863, involving legally free and enslaved workers who performed their jobs in the capital of the Empire. In this context, the laws banning the Atlantic slave trade led parliamentarians and landowners to discuss different projects related to the replacement of labor. These debates culminated in the creation of laws that regulated the provision of services and encouraged the immigration of workers, especially Europeans. The research seeks to investigate, through court cases, how these disputed projects affected men and women who were part of working arrangements characterized by dependency, coercion and mechanisms of re-enslavement. It also aims to explore the strategies these workers developed to collect unpaid wages for services rendered and how these demands were dealt with by lawyers and judges.
