SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the relationship between the Spanish and the indigenous peoples in America through the engravings present in volumes IV, V and VI of Theodore de Bry's “Grands Voyages”, entitled “America Pars Quarta” (1594), “America Pars Quinta” (1595) and “America Pars Sexta” (1596), which were inspired by Girolamo Benzoni's “Historia del Mondo Nuovo” (1565). Based on these sources, the aim is to approach the representation of the violence committed by the Spanish against the natives in the New World and the construction of the Leyenda Negra in the engraver's production. In order to discuss the anti-Hispanic narrative, we aim to relate and compare Girolamo Benzoni's discourse with the engravings produced by Theodore de Bry. Finally, we also address the impact of the visual narrative of the volumes over time, considering the circulation and use of the images as inspiration for other productions.
