SUMMARY:

This study aims to examine aspects of the pharmaceutical sector in Brazil through the
analysis of patent applications filed with the Industrial Privileges Fund of the National

Archives in Rio de Janeiro between 1873 and 1910. It seeks to problematize the
configuration of this sector and discuss specific characteristics that defined it at the turn
of the century. The research considers not only the national context of increasing
formalization and professionalization within the pharmaceutical field during the final
quarter of the nineteenth century, but also a range of national and international debates
surrounding the legislative transformations regarding the granting of industrial
privileges. Particular attention is given to the implications of the 1882 Patent Law on
national patenting practices. By integrating discussions from the field of the History of
Health—particularly those concerning the tensions among medical knowledge systems
in nineteenth-century Brazil—with historiographical debates on the development of
intellectual property rights in the country, this study seeks to offer a nuanced
understanding of the pharmaceutical industry from a scarcely explored perspective. The
examination of the formulas and content of the inventions registered during this period
provides insight into the defining features of the pharmaceutical sector in Brazil at the
turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century.
