SUMMARY:

This thesis project seeks to understand the experiences of political struggle waged by the contemporary Black movement in relation to Brazilian public institutions. The research considers two aspects: the "maturation" of Black activism, which began to hold the State accountable and demand a stance on the reality of the Black population; and the State's "opening" to the demands of civil society at the genesis of its redemocratization process. Through biographies, interviews, speeches, Black press periodicals, audiovisual recordings, government documents, and an extensive bibliography, the study sought to examine how the Black movement reshaped the relationship between race and policing from a national perspective.
