RESUMO:

The objective of this research is to analyze how the black identity will be affirmed around the religions of African 

matrices in the proposal of reading and the actions of the Museum of the Defense Campaign of Brazilian Folklore 

(MCDFB), created in Rio de Janeiro in 1968. This museum is a result of the actions that had been undertaken 

since 1947 by the Brazilian Folklore Defense Campaign (CDFB) and (in 1976 it was renamed Édison Carneiro 

Folklore Museum). We believe that the religions of African matrices were incorporated by the Museum as an 

object of folklore. The intention is to reflect on the racial question in the approach taken on folklore by the 

institution presented here. The research intends to answer two hypotheses: the first is that, in the reading 

by the Museum of the Defense Campaign of Brazilian Folklore, (later Édison Carneiro Folklore Museum), racial 

conflicts were concealed from the debate about folklore at the moment when the Museum was used as an

instrument for the construction of national identity. From this place, he reaffirmed the black identity around 

the religions of African matrices, erasing the racial conflicts of the national identity. In the second hypothesis,

 we defend that the said Museum of Folklore, treated this religious matrix on the conception of the exotic.
