SUMMARY:

This dissertation examines the discourse of Pastor Antônio Carlos Costa within the historical context of
2015 to 2018, a period during which he came to be labeled a “communist pastor” within the Brazilian
evangelical field. It seeks to understand how Costa mobilizes a political-religious vocabulary in his three
works: Convulsão Protestante (2015), Teologia da Trincheira (2017), and Azorrague (2018), analyzing
the extent to which his discourse challenges or departs from the hegemonic logic upheld by the ruling
elites of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil, thereby configuring itself as a dissident practice, herein
conceptualized as “communist heresy.” The study further discusses whether such a classification is
analytically sustainable: Is it deemed heretical because it constitutes a communist discourse articulated
within a religious framework? Or should it be understood as a symbolic mechanism of exclusion,
operating within a contested field, whose central function is the delegitimization of dissent and the
preservation of the hegemonic interests and power of these elites—thus rendering “heresy” a label that
does not correspond to the doctrinal content of the discourse itself?
