SUMMARY:

This research seeks to understand the trajectory of the Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT - Democratic Labor Party) during the democratic transition (1979-1988) through its experience in the city of Nova Iguaçu. The study is grounded in Bob Jessop's (2016) Strategic-Relational Approach to examine how party operate vis-à-vis State institutions. The analysis explores how a newly created party dealt with the need to build its identity, balancing the representation of emerging social movements, such as the Movimento Amigos do Bairro (MAB), with the accommodation of traditional political forces and leadership from the state of Rio de Janeiro. The aim is to investigate defining events for the party, beginning with its victory in the 1982 elections, driven by Leonel Brizola's charisma in a local phenomenon of "Estadualização por Legenda" (State-level Alignment by Party Label), moving through the severe institutional crises that led to the impeachment of Mayor Paulo Leone, and culminating in the "routinization of charisma" phase, observed at its culmination in the 1988 elections. To this end, the research draws on a wide range of sources, including electoral data from the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), dossiers from the Serviço Nacional de Informações (SNI - National Information Service), Oral History interviews with former militants, and extensive journalistic documentation, with emphasis on the local newspaper Correio da Lavoura, as well as publications from Jornal do Brasil, Luta Democrática, and O Fluminense.
