SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the insertion of the book Memória analítica acerca do comércio de escravos e acerca dos males da escravidão doméstica, written by Frederico Burlamaqui, within the public debate on the prohibition of the transatlantic slave trade in Rio de Janeiro between 1831 and 1850, understanding the work as part of the political and intellectual disputes surrounding the enforcement of the Law of November 7, 1831. Published in 1837, the book is examined not only in terms of its content, but also in its circulation and reception in the press, in order to understand how it functioned as an instrument of intervention in the public sphere, articulating legal, political, and moral arguments against the slave trade, while also revealing the limits of a discourse produced within the imperial elites. At this initial stage of the research, the political, social, and intellectual context that enabled the emergence of this debate in the imperial capital was reconstructed through the analysis of the Law of November 7, 1831, focusing on its specificities, ambiguities, and limits, as well as through the examination of transformations in spaces of sociability and the expansion of public debate in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro, with particular attention to the role of the press and political writings in shaping public opinion. Furthermore, the study investigates the role of the Sociedade Defensora da Liberdade e Independência Nacional, highlighting how the issue of the illegal slave trade was mobilized within its forum and connected to initiatives such as the essay contest that led to the publication of Burlamaqui’s work.
