SUMMARY:

his research aims to study the creation and activities of the Misericórdias
(charitable brotherhoods) in the Kingdom of Portugal between 1498 and 1521,
understanding them as a mechanism for promoting royal sovereignty and spirituality in
the court of King Manuel I. The Misericórdias were lay confraternities under royal
protection that, over time, assumed the administration of hospitals, the execution of wills,
the performance of funeral ceremonies and processions, in addition to providing
assistance to poor patients, widows, orphans, prisoners, and the so-called "ashamed" –
impoverished nobles. Through the preserved documentation of the Santa Casas de
Misericórdia of Portugal, we aim to understand the creation of the Misericórdias within
the context of royal power's interference in the field of social assistance, based on the
analysis of a corporate society in which works of mercy occupy a central place. Finally,
we also aim to discern the instrumental foundations that underpin the practice of works
of mercy, focusing on the main works of devotional dissemination and political theology
published and debated during the Manueline period.
