SUMMARY:

The research proposes a reflection about the action of Partido Democrático
Trabalhista (PDT) in the municipality Nova Iguaçu between the years 1980 and 1992.
The study highlights the figure of Leonel Brizola as a charismatic leader who
successfully mediated the discourses directed to the fluminense population, especially
those in the periphery areas, like the Baixada Fluminense. After contextualizing the
end of the military intervention and creation of the new political parties, this search
discusses the performance of the “Socialismo Moreno” and the Movimento Amigos
do Bairro (MAB) as driving forces that established the PDT as a party of the masses
in Nova Iguaçu. For this mediation, the newspapers O Globo and Correio da Lavoura
were used as sources that differed to analyzing the party’s force and the and
administration exercised by the mayors in the Nova Iguaçu.
