RESUMO:

The turn of the nineteenth century to the twentieth brought profound transformations in the way of thinking and interpreting the world. Eugenics emerged in this period as a science and social movement that intended to apply knowledge about heredity to the social environment, thereby seeking the "racial improvement" of some human types. In Brazil, eugenics won many supporters among the most celebrated scientists and authorities of the time, obtaining the pinnacle of its recognition during the first Brazilian Congress of Eugenics in Rio de Janeiro in 1929. With this master thesis we intend to analyze the Congress of Eugenics, her participants, the relevance and repercussions of this event in the country, especially about discussions, formulation and implementation of eugenics public policies in Brazil.
