RESUMO:

The present research focuses on the cloistered female life in cloistered in colonial society of the second half of the eighteenth century (1742-1782). The temporal cut goes from the foundation of Nossa Senhora do Desterro recollection in Rio de Janeiro until its transformation into a canonically established monastery of the barefoot Carmelites order under the reformed rule of Santa Teresa. When applying microanalysis as a methodology, we propose to reconstitute the collection group, the community life and the importance those women had exercised for the transformation of the institution into the first barefoot Carmelite monastery in Portuguese America. We will try to identify how these women constituted themselves as subjects of space, to establish the networks of sociabilities created in order to resist the impositions of patriarchal society and ecclesiastical authority, despite the feminine conduct that used to be followed in the eighteenth century colony. Besides this conjuncture of the main events that favored the elevation of the recollection in the convent and the strengthening of the institution, we intend to contextualize economic, political and social aspects in the religious sphere of Rio de Janeiro.
