RESUMO:

This project aims to understand the events that culminated in the creation of the Centro de Documentação Histórica of the city of Vassouras in 1987. To do this, I analyze the archival reality in Brazil from the 1970s, wich is
essencial to understand the appreciation of the documentary heritage, the emergence of new preservation and storage techniques, the recognition of the archivist's profession. I analyze the creation of the history course of Severino Sombra University, which was fundamental for the institution to have contact
with the documentation of the municipal archive of the city of Vassouras. This study is also an invitation to reflect on the role of the documental collection for the historian, place that keeps and protects documents and where the first moment of historiographic production takes place.
