This research aims to understand the processes of territorialization and deterritorialization of Indians in the villages and settlements of the province of Espírito Santo in the second half of the nineteenth century. The temporal cut between 1850 and 1889 is politically relevant, since it was from 1845, with the promulgation of a new General Regulation for the resumption of missions in the Empire of Brazil, which sought to think the place of peoples indigenous peoples in the protruding nation. This document, seen in conjunction with another published five years later, the Land Law of 1850, gives us a more complete political picture of the development of an Indian policy in the Second Kingdom. In the province of Espirito Santo, the application of these two documents will be analyzed from two different historical experiences: in villages and in indigenous villages. These spaces will be thought in an individualized way, since they comprise very different experiences of contact. In the villages the process of construction of the indigenous territorialities took place under the regime of tutela restituted with the Regulation of the Missions of 1845. Whereas in the Indian villages analyzed here, Nova Almeida and Santa Cruz, the Indians were considered free to manage their people and goods. With these differences in mind, the thesis seeks to demonstrate two common aspects that were intertwined in the provincial policy of Espírito Santo: colonization and catechesis. From these two interests the provincial policy sought to liberate the lands occupied by these populations and to use them as labor in the public services. In the villages, the process of expropriation of indigenous lands was also linked to the interests of creating national and foreign colonies, but it was also related to the actions of the Municipal Councils and squatters who took over the lands traditionally occupied. In spite of all this violence in contact with the Indians of the towns and villages, the thesis seeks to demonstrate the alliances and modes of resistance that were triggered by these different ethnic groups to live and survive the colonial experiences in which they were inserted.
