RESUMO:

The present work proposes to study the crisis of the railway system of the state of Rio de Janeiro during the 1960s and 1970s and its effects on the population of south-central region of the state. Specifically, we intend to analyze the process of dismantling the section of the "Linha Auxiliar da Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil", relating it to the context of profound political and economic changes that occurred in the period studied, in order to understand the factors that led to the extinction of the rail network in the region. This action led to the emptying of the municipalities served, a situation similar to that occurred in several regions of the country in the second half of the twentieth century, coinciding with the rise of highways and the growing budget deficit in the administration of the Federal Railway Network. We intend to address the way in which the government prioritized the expansion of highways, taking into account the development of the automobile industry started in the 1950s, turning them into the main modal axis of the national transport of cargo and passengers.
