This research seeks to analyze the family and individual trajectory of the black population that lived in the municipality of Itaguaí between 1870 and 1930, in the Baixada Fluminense. Starting from the cross-check of sources such as: post-mortem inventories, ecclesiastical and civil records of birth, marriage and death, we will try to reconstruct these trajectories, having the family, in its multiple possibilities, as a central element. The context of great changes of the period, the crisis of slavery, the decline of coffee plantationsand the frequent epidemics faced by farmers, poor farmers, the slave and free population, will serve to understand the possibilities of these individuals act. Access to land, the strategies used to create spaces of solidarity and sociability will be elements to be investigated as forms of mutual protection between the descendants of the enslaved in the early twentieth century.
