SUMMARY:

This study turns its eyes to a moment in the history of humanity far away in time, the antiquity. What we research is linked to Judea, more specifically to Jerusalem. Our main objective is to understand the daily life of the aristocratic Jews who assimilated Hellenism in this city between the years 175 and 172 BC. To that extent, our documentation is composed by two books well known for their historiography: 1st and 2nd Maccabees. However, due to the temporal cut and the method adopted (Quantitative Content Analysis), we do not work with the entirety books. We only use sections such as 1Mc 1, 10-15 and 2Mc 4, 7-20. Thus, and taking into account historiographical discussions about the cultural aspects of the Hellenistic period, it was possible to contemplate the presence of Greek institutions in the mentioned daily life , such as the gymnasium (accompanied by the efebia) and their involvement with young Jews; not only that, but also the transformation of Jerusalem into an oligarchic and dependent polis.
