SUMMARY:

The research aims to understand the relationship between the Brazilian recording industry and censorship
agencies in the 1970’s. The historical setting was the military dictatorship, marked by repression,
surveillance, torture, among countless illegal acts committed by the State. This period also was marked by
the expansion and consolidation of this industry. The authoritarian and militarized State used censorship as a
tool of repression and strict control in the fight against artistic and cultural manifestations. This mechanism
was not exclusive to the military dictatorship, but presented its own characteristics throughout its 21 years of
existence and lasted until the promulgation of the 1988 Constitution. The Public Diversions Censorship
Division (DCDP), the body that centralized censorship in the 1970s, had its origins with the creation of the
Public Diversions Censorship Service (SCDP) in 1945 - a period of democratization. This demonstrates the
roots of censorship in the history of the country, and it is used (in democratic governments and dictatorships)
to prevent the rupture of the current order. Faced with the scenario of military dictatorship and the growth of
the recording industry in Brazil, censorship is brought as an element to understand the problems presented.
The aim is to: understand how censorship works through the Public Entertainment Censorship Division
(formerly SCDP), especially music censorship; trace the trajectory of the Brazilian recording industry during
the military dictatorship; in a particular way, reflect about the relationship between record companies and
censorship, and their relationship with the military regime, in general.
