SUMMARY:

This research aims to understand the social and economic relationships established by workshops, factories and manufactures in the central parishes (Santana, Sacramento, Candelária, Santa Rita, São José, Engenho Velho, Lagoa and Gloria) in Rio de Janeiro between 1830 and 1870, having as their central issue their insertion in the urban space. When faced with the codes of postures and infractions of municipal postures of the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro, we verified the existence of regulations regarding the location of factories and workshops in the center of the province between 1830 and 1870. Based on a hygienist speech, through these documents we realized that a project that clearly separated the factory segment from residents and other professional branches began to be outlined in the first half of the 19th century. In order to verify this issue, in addition to postures and posture infractions, we analyzed various requirements about factories, municipal licenses for factory establishments, minutes from the City Council, reports from parish inspectors, complaints and complaints codes, epidemics, public hygiene and health codes, consultation requests and factory supply records from the Royal Court of the Board of Commerce, Agriculture, Factories and Navigation, letters, various ordinances and decrees of the Ministry of the Empire and the editions of Almanak Laemmert. It will be through this documentary set that we will be able to glimpse the clashes waged by the center of Rio de Janeiro and the groups interested in this region.
