SUMMARY:

This research aims to discuss the female representations in Machado de Assis' literary work, identifying the different levels of subalternities in which these women were conditioned, as well as the gender relations instituted by society. For this, we will analyze the novels Helena (1876), Iaiá Garcia (1878), Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas (1881) and Dom Casmurro (1899). As a starting point, we will try to analyse Machado de Assis' own experience as a mulatto intellectual and how this might have influenced of his composition of novels, short stories and chronicles and their respective characters. Based on the Hemeneutic method proposed by the philosopher of Language Paul Ricoeur, we will use the idea of the three "mimeses" to reflect on Literature as a source that expresses the relationships between author (figuration - mimesis 1), work (configuration - mimesis 2) and society ( refiguration – mimesis 3), since, inserted in a certain context, they portray important issues to understand a period or an Era.
