Jacarepaguá; Suburb; Arrabalde; Rio de Janeiro; Tramway
The purpose of this work is to study the transformations that happened in parish of Jacarepaguá, between the years 1870 – 1890, period of the “transport revolution”, taking as a parameter the changes in the integration of the parish to the Rio de Janeiro city, in the real state profile, in the land exploration forms, in the division large local properties and in the economic diversification of the region. The main objective is to analyze the socioeconomic and geographic profile of parish, using as a reference the concepts of arrabalde and/or suburb. During the search, a set of sources of varied nature was used, including documentation about licensing and administration of the Companhia Ferro-Carril of Jacarepaguá, censuses, Alamanaque Laemmert and jour nalism. The central hypothesis defended is that the tramway arrival in parish of Jacarepaguá generated different results of the initial intentions (enhance the production of local connection to the city’s core) favoring local transformations without, however, overcoming the agrarian characteristics of the region. It is also shown that is already observed in the period a transition between the categories of arrabalde and suburb, however, with rural characteristics, characterized as a “surveillance” place.
