SUMMARY:

The tenth bishop of Pará, Dom Antônio de Macedo Costa, is one of the best-known personalities in the history of Brazilian Catholicism in the second half of the 19th century. Considered as an ultramontanist, the bishop's actions made a significant impact not only in his bishopric region (Pará and Amazonas), but affected all the nation. Directly involved in the conflict called the “Questão Religiosa”, the bishop challenged the Empire in the fight against temporal management over spiritual matters and promoted an impact with what he considered to be modern heresy, such as Protestantism and Freemasonry. Analyzing his speech, we can design his theological-doctrinal and Catholic iconographic project for the region, which opposes 19th century modernity wants to fits itself with the Middle Ages, having it as a source of legitimacy, identity and auctoritas. Dom Antônio refuses to be called ultramontane, exalts society and the Medieval Church, and appropriates many of its theological-doctrinal, imagery and liturgical conceptions to put his project into practice in Pará. At this point, the present thesis is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the construction of Christianity(ies) as a religious institution connected to the Roman Empire, which is equipped with political and religious power, and the development of the devotion of Christian images, theoretically treated here as imago, during the medieval. Two iconographic themes will be emphasized: the crucifixion (imago-crucifix) and the Virgin Mary (Theotókos), highlighting the contribution of the painter Giotto de Bondone to such representations and to the construction of the concept of the Middle Ages. The second part will be dedicated to the ultramontane contextualization in order to understand the position of Bishop Dom Macedo Costa, and also to analyze his project, which is based in Belém do Pará’s Catedral da Sé. Through the diocesan newspapers under the direction of the bishop, A Estrella do Norte and A Boa Nova, and the reform he undertook for the decoration of the interior of the Cathedral, we will analyze, through the theory of neomedievalism, the appropriations that Dom Macedo makes of the medieval period to recreate theologically and imagetically a Medieval Church in Pará.
