SUMMARY:

In this research, I explore and analyze the historical emergence of transvestites in São Paulo, in the 1970s and 1980s. I mobilize the problematization of gender developed by Judith Butler in convergence with the analysis of Foucauldian subjectivation, a methodological reorientation that Michel Foucault carries out in his studies on the governmentality, its last assault on the subject and power, underlining the practices of the self, self-government. I think about stylized performative acts that remake genre articulated to other hierarchies, proposing to emphasize the invention of modes of stylistic exercise of freedom, embodied modes of existence and relationships that point to the possibilities of an author subject, who acts on himself in the interaction between themselves and others, reworking the subjections. Based on Claudia Wonder's performances and histories, which help to analyze the historical emergence of transvestite subjectivities in São Paulo in the mentioned decades, I focus on Andréa de Mayo, Brenda Lee, Thelma Lipp and other histories of transgender and transvestite women who achieved fame in those years with their activism and artistic performance.. Analyzing press discourses, films, documentaries and writings, I research subjects in subjectivities, situated processes, keeping in connection the politics, the aesthetics and the ethics. I emphasize criticism, for its function of “de-subjecting”, admitting that the work of oneself towards oneself, the historically peculiar forms of subjectivation, related to time and corporeality, are and can be creative. That the practices of the self, although in force within the practices of knowledge/power, build more reflective ways of living, subjectivities that can displace what we take for granted and transform the frames of thought, through a process of creation.
