SUMMARY:

This research intends to elucidate the systems of representation of the mexica ball game, called tlachtli, in amerindian and colonizing perspectives. For this, we seek to think about the relations of this playful practice with mesoamerican cosmology, and with the relations of social, religious and political power of that context, for the purpose of establishing the objectives and interests assumed in the reproduction of tlachtli in the documents, in addition to the possible uses of these images and discourses. For this, we will specifically investigate two documents related to the mexica context, the Borbonic Codex, produced in the context of the Initial Colonization, and two chapters of the Historia de las Indias de la Nueva España e islas de Tierra Firme (1581) by Diego Durán, where he talks about the game he witnessed. Thus, we limit the practice of mexicas and avoid confusion with other ball games in Mesoamerica. The enlargement of the cutout for the mayans happens only for reasons of comparative analysis with representations of the game in contemporary times in the anime Onyx Equinox (2020)
