SUMMARY:

The research is dedicated to the study of the relations between indigenous groups and colonizers during the process of colonial occupation of the hinterlands of Paraíba Nova until the consolidation of the region with the coffee economy, between the 18th and 19th centuries, with a focus on compulsory labor and other mechanisms of control used by settlers for the employment of native labor, legitimized by colonial and imperial indigenist policy, or practiced in spite of them. Historians of the New Indigenous History, through analysis of documents such as post-mortem inventories, baptismal records, minutes of the chambers and judges of orphans, censuses, correspondence and traveler reports, show us the various strategies that the colonizers used to mask the capture and the indigenous slavery in the fields, in mineral exploration, among other activities. The protagonism of the paulistas in advancing frontiers in the hinterlands, in mineral exploration and in the capture of indigenous people is decisive for the colonial occupation of Paraíba Nova, a region considered "forbidden lands" and used by explorers for the embezzlement of gold, especially after the opening of the Path New, opened by Garcia Rodrigues Paes at the beginning of the 18th century. The Letters from the Guaratinguetá City Council (SP) officials, after the resumption of the process of opening the so-called "Caminho da Piedade", connecting the old Vila da Piedade (today Lorena-SP) and the Santa Cruz Farm, in Rio de Janeiro, between 1765 and 1785, document not only the process of occupation of Paraíba Nova - a region that comprised a territory that stretched from Areias-SP to the hinterlands of Barra do Piraí - RJ - but also the relations of the settlers with the native peoples. The analysis of the experiences of late villages in our region, among which São Luiz Beltrão, São João de Queluz, Valença and Conservatória, based on the historiography that deals with regional and indigenist themes, allows us to understand the resumption of a State policy that allowed the use of labor in slavery or compulsory labor. I intend to answer the following question: How were the different practices and working relationships between settlers and indigenous people observed in the São Paulo part repeated and/or perpetuated in the Vale do Paraíba Fluminense?
