SUMMARY:

We focus on the Revolt occurred in the state of São Paulo in July 1924. The objective of the research was to understand, from the perspective of Social History, who were involved and what circumstances led them to make up the movement that sought the overthrow of the government of the then President of the Republic Arthur Bernardes. With the analysis of the state-filed lawsuit aga inst the insurgents, it was possible to verify a complex diversity of people, whether civil, members of the Army or the Public Force, with social origins and plural political perspectives. Most of these implicated were civilians and sergeants, as opposed to the classic idea that tenentist movements would be composed of a majority of military officers holding the lieutenant's rank. The work was organized into five chapters. With the exception of the first, which outlines an overview of the Uprising and the judicial process studied, the other four chapters are dedicated to understanding the movement from the individuals involved: officers of the Army and The Public Force (Chapter II); sergeants of both corporations (Chapter III); (Chapter IV) and foreigners (Chapter V). With regard to civilians, we highlight the fact that they were not restricted to giving support, but had an active action, involved since planning and composing battalions in the largest urban conflict ever record e d in the history of Republican Brazil. The plurality of subjects, motivations and tangled expectations makes us think of the existence of many revolts within one, with various demands and disputes.
