SUMMARY:

This work deals with a period that has as its starting point the year 1976, the year in
which Dom Adriano Hypólito was kidnapped by a far-right group, and as the final point
the year 1989, when the first direct elections for the presidency of the Republic. In this

period of time, the country and its population experienced several social, economic and
political changes that had a strong influence on the directions followed by the Brazilian
state. This text seeks to explore the experience of the Catholic clergy during this time,
aiming to understand how the dictatorial regime acted in the Baixada Fluminense,
especially in relation to the members of the Nova Iguaçu diocese and how they were
watched by the repressive apparatus that saw them as a threat to the current regime. As
explained in the analyzed period, this surveillance will take place in the final period of
the military dictatorship, as well as in the beginning of the New Republic. The
documents used in the research were produced by the information agencies of the
Brazilian state and are available at the Public Archives of the State of Rio de Janeiro
and the National Archives.
