SUMMARY:

The main objective of this research is to analyze the enslaved black workers, sold through trade and intraprovincial and interprovincial trafficking to the region of Cantagalo, at the end of the 19th century (1880 - 1888). Different views and debates intensified with the imminent end of slavery at the end of the 19th century. Many social and political aspects of the Empire were disputed by the masters, among them, the maintenance of slave labor. Interprovincial trafficking and the internal trade of slaves in the municipality of Cantagalo, at the end of the 19th century, coexisted with the gradual expansion of discourses against the maintenance of slavery. With the consolidated agricultural coffee culture in the region of Cantagalo, the continuous trade of enslaved workers became necessary, even in the context of the imminent end of slavery. In observing these issues of trade and trafficking in slaves, the proposal is to investigate and analyze recor ds of purchases and sales of slaves in Cantagalo, dated between 1880 and 1883. During this period, we can understand some signs and trajectories of these “arrived” workers. in Cantagalo, as well as the scenarios and contexts of purchases and sales of slaves in the region. From the Book of Records of Purchases and Sales of Slaves in Cantagalo, the social profiles of this population (gender, age, origin, color, trade) are also presented and questioned, with a focus on the construction and understanding of these black bodies in the world of slaves. job. Finally, we will investigate the “black party”, seeking the opposing and favorable discourses to the maintenance of slavery in Cantagalo and the aspects of sociability in the midst of conflicts.
