SUMMARY:

This work proposes to investigate the strategy of the enslaved in the search for freedom in the second half of the 19th century in the municipality of Paraty. For this purpose, several documentary typologies were used in the construction of this research, such as ecclesiastical sources (the baptismal seats of the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios), the releases of the Emancipation Fund, two judicial proceedings located in the Public Archive of the Judiciary of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Reports of the Presidents of Provinces, Imperial Census and some exchanges of correspondence between the court and the municipalityd and Paraty. One of the main objectives of this work is to point out how these subjects - men and women - developed actions, maintained sociability and solidarity relations with social actors of free or captive category, to conquer their  freedoms and that of their children. To achieve these objectives, we resorted to the creation of a database that allowed us to identify information that is not explicit in the documentation. In this way, we verified the need to apply the micro-history method and with it the nominative link, so that we could point out the kinship and sociability networks. Therefore, the research intends to indicate new particularities between enslaved and free subjects, indicate new possibilities and contribute to the historiographical production on the subject of slavery and manumission in Brazil.
