SUMMARY:

The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the discussions on the secularization of public cemeteries that took place in the Provincial Assembly of Rio de Janeiro in the 1870s-1890s in terms of ecclesiastical jurisdiction linked to public necropolises and their limitation to the parish of Sant' Anna do Piraí in the Vale do Paraíba Fluminense. To understand how the idea of hygiene, through the debates on the medicalization of death, influenced the decisions of the municipality of Piraí on the choice of land and the creation of the village's public cemetery in the 1830s from 1830 to 1850. In this way it can be studied, whether there was opposition to the transfer of the dead to the temporary cemetery, to the acceptance of the requirement to establish a cemetery outside the religious temple, or to the imperial decisions on public cemeteries discussed and approved by the provincial assembly of Fluminense from the 1870s . Therefore, the main sources used in the research are the Minutes of the City Council of Piraí, Death Books of the Matriz de Sant'Anna, Death Books of the City Council, Annaes of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Rio de Janeiro and the journals Diário do Rio de Janeiro, The Apostle, The Evangelical Press.
