SUMMARY:

Within the Jesuit missions in India, the southern region stands out for its particular complexity. The regions outside the control of the Portuguese Padroado demanded that many missionaries adapt to local customs, aiming at their insertion in the caste system and thus a greater facility for attracting conversions. The most famous of these missionaries was the Italian Roberto de Nobili, protagonist along with the Portuguese Gonçalo Fernandes Trancoso in the clash known as the Malabar Rites Quarrel. The Quarrel was a confrontation that focused on the legitimacy of the method of adaptation used by Nobili, the method of accomodatio. In a sense, after the death of Fernandes, Nobili emerged victorious from the confrontation and served as an example for several missionaries who later used the same strategy. One of them was the Portuguese John de Brito, who taking advantage of the context favorable to the use of the methodology, carried out an insertion in the caste system so intense that he kept the Brahmin clothes even when he returned to Portugal. In this sense, the objective of this dissertation is to locate the figure of the Jesuit John de Brito in the midst of the missionary dynamics in the Province of Malabar of the Society of Jesus between the years 1673 and 1693.
