The Mesoamerican juego de pelota and its representations: indigenous, European and contemporary views.
Mesoamerica, Tlachtli, Representations.
The Mesoamerican ball game, called tlachtli in most documents of pre-colonial Central México, was one of the most important cultural activities of those peoples. In this research, we focus on the representations of the ball game in different temporalities and textual typologies. We analyzed these reproductions in three documents to understand the differences, layers and continuities of the intentions present in these images. They are: the Codex Bourbonicus — an Amerindian book from the 15th-16th century —, two chapters from the travel narrative of Diego Durán, a Dominican friar who participated in the initial colonization, and the contemporary animation Onyx Equinox (2020). We will use renowned researchers in Mesoamerican studies, such as Federico Navarrete Liñares, Mary Miller and Karl Taube, to help analyze the Amerindian cosmological perspective present in the documentation. As for representation, we depart from the perspectives of Roger Chartier and bell hooks and Néstor Canclini, the latter, particularly in his debate about modernity and cultural identities. This dissertation intends, based on these reflections, to analyze this long historical process of representation, which is rooted in colonial practices and is the result of disputes and renovations through coloniality, reaching contemporaneity and can be observed in cultural products such as the aforementioned animation.
