SUMMARY:

The exceptionality of Aspasia of Miletus is proven when we notice that her name was not hidden in documents referring to the classical times. Every file in traditional historiography tends to hide female names or discriminate women as playing a secondary role. Aspásia is one of the few women in antiquity to be part of narratives wrote by men. In Plutarch, she is mentioned in Parallel Lives for instance, where her name appears in the middle of a narrative about the life of Pericles. This work aims to understand the ambiguity of the primary sources where the name of Aspásia appears sometimes linked to philosophy and sometimes linked to history. Such ambiguity allows us to attribute literary and historical connections to the role of the women in ancient Athens. It is worth remembering that such constructions are male attributions: what is known about women are male registers and impressions.
