SUMMARY:

The existence of miraculous and inexplicable phenomena caused by individuals who practiced magic was something that permeated Early Modern imagination, and was considered real and even commonplace in societies of the period in Europe. The possibility of using magic to achieve the most diverse objectives seduced tha imagination and attitudes of many people. Among those seduced by witchcraft practices were priests and nuns residing in catholic monasteries. In this sense, the present work focus on Portugal, more specifically at Lisbon in the 18th Century, seeking to understand how the Inquisition judged their peers and the differences in treatment applied to cases and individuals, whether they were men or women. In addition, we will examine the actions of those individuals, considering their motivations and beliefs regarding magical practices.
