SUMMARY:
This research seeks to understand the figurations of archetypes referring to black masculinity in Native Son, a novel written by Richard Wright, published in 1940. The fictional story is set in Chicago, at the end of the 1930’s, and presents the consequences of segregation and racism in the life of Bigger Thomas, a young black man who, accidentally, is compelled to commit the murder of Mary Dalton, a young white woman from an influential family in the city. It is estimated that, in the first three weeks of the book's release alone, two hundred and fifteen thousand copies were sold, which made countless subsequent editions possible and made Richard Wright one of the most influential authors of african-american literature in the 20th century. However, while the work was a sales success, it was also read and interpreted in different ways in the decades following its publication. Given the context of production surrounding the work and the resulting readings and interpretations made in subsequent decades, this research seeks to understand how the novel written by Richard Wright composes figurations around the archetypes referring to the african-american man.
