SUMMARY:

During the 12th century, Aelred of Rievaulx (1110-1167), a Cistercian abbot from northern Anglia, extensively devoted himself to writing about emotional life. He focused his work on the themes of amicitia (friendship) and love, considering them as pillars of an anthropology that highlighted interpersonal relationships and the connection with the divine as fundamental to human development. His interest in this subject led him to address the issue of monastic education, a crucial dimension for the process of socialization and monastic formation, which, as we identify, constituted the essence of his major treatises. What role does affectivity play in the conception and projection of healthy interpersonal relationships, essential for constructing, in the present moment, a community of faith (ecclesia) united by the bonds of friendship, combined with concern for a relationship built with a transcendent absolute? In his treatises Mirror of Charity and Spiritual Friendship, central works on love and friendship written in the 1140s and 1160s, respectively, Aelred explores affectivity, represented by affectus, defined as a spontaneous and pleasant movement of the mind toward another. Aelred thus engages in a pedagogy that can be described as spiritually affective, drawing upon the Johannine maxim "God is love!" transforming it into "God is friends". His aim was not only to demonstrate that emotions can be (re)directed in the educational process but also to emphasize their vital importance for human beings, the only creatures capable of attaining happiness and progressing spiritually with the support of others (SF, I:69, p. 50; MC, III:31, p. 250). The interest in human nature and interpersonal relationships with the divine reveals that both love and friendship, as human bonds, had a social dimension. The choice to prioritize emotions as a central part of the theory concerning interpersonal relationships and the divine showcases the Cistercians' appreciation for nurturing friendships, promoting them within the social context of the monastic environment. This setting facilitated the implementation of communal life. Through personal examples and biblical narratives, instruments were employed for this purpose, aiming to teach that affective life, infused with the principles of friendship and love, could represent conducive realities for learning and individual expression.
