SUMMARY:

The period from 1831 to 1833 consisted of the beginning of the Regency Period, in the form of a provisional regency, which was marked by social and political manifestations across various social sectors and spheres of political participation, especially in the press. In this sense, the main objective of this research is to identify the relationship between the political ideas elaborated by Francisco Salles Torres Homem - a 19-year-old man of color - in the newspaper O Independente , between 1832 and 1833, and his experiences as a man of color in the 19th century. In O Independente, Torres Homem presented his own interpretations of the political vocabulary introduced by the Enlightenment of the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as his political and economic project for the construction of the Brazilian state, based on the norms of moderate political liberalism. Torres Homem's work on the newspaper O Independente made him  one of the pioneers of the Black Press, which emerged at the beginning of the 19th century, made up of him and other journalists of African origin.
