SUMMARY:

This work intends to investigate the hunger strike, in the Frei Caneca prison, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the year 1979. What characterizes the importance of this strike was because it was the first hunger strike, during the period of the military business dictatorship. , which was not related to the prison conditions suffered by political prisoners, but rather to the amnesty movement that was already being designed by the military government. The 14 political prisoners who participated in the strike, however, intended to be political agents in the fight for amnesty. The strike lasted 32 days and was joined by various sectors of civil society, as well as unions, amnesty organizations, artists, intellectuals and parliamentarians, from both political camps at the time, those who were in favor of the dictatorial government and those who were against. During the strike, several political prisoners, in other prisons, in Brazil, also joined the strike. Although these political prisoners knew that the amnesty law no. 6683 would not include them, as they were considered “terrorists”, the thesis defended by them was to be seen as political agents of the redemocratization process that was beginning to dazzle on the country's horizon.
