SUMMARY:

This research is dedicated to the study of structuring military forces in the province of
Rio Grande do Sul, as from the trajectory of Manoel Luís Osório (1808-1879). The your
participated in different conflicts throughout the 19th century, the services provided on
the country’s border, made your trajectory a privileged channel for to understand the
construction of the army in the south frontier to the Empire of Brazil. In the 1870’s he
was received the highest position in the military hierarchy, that of marshal, and was also
chosen by the emperor to occupy one of the seats in the senate and the ministry of war.
He also obtained the titles of baron, viscount, and marquis of the Herval. He obtained his
titles during your performance of the Triple Alliance War (1864-1870). That is the “final
point” of your successful career military and policy. Nonetheless, the trajectory of Manoel
Luís Osório in the army don’t follow a linear logic. Although, your insertion military and
rise in the army, yet a low understood. This study seeks to understand your involvement
in the world of war, your introduction to force, and his strategies for being a rise in the
military hierarchy. This work aims to analyse the construction of the Manoel Luís Osório
career, his performance in conflicts, but also in periods of “peace”, the relationships he
established with commanders and subordinates. The hypothesis that I suppose throughout
this thesis is that Manoel Luís Osório trajectory of social, military and political ascension
was built on strategies and articulations that produced links with the Empire. In other
words, the relationships formed helped him to project in the military sphere and in the
restricted world of the Court. To this end, I sought to work with a diverse group of
historical sources, to pursue his “name”, the traces and fragments of his actions as an
individual.
